As expressed by two Chinese idioms, “better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times” and “reading ten thousand books is not as good as traveling ten thousand miles,” travel has long occupied an important place in the lives of individuals as well as communities. Tourism, which is often referred to as “brick-and-mortar,” is now the world’s largest industry and has become a very important area of economic activity and a social phenomenon of modern society. In sociology, however, tourism has long been considered a less important social phenomenon, resulting in a relative lack of theoretical development and analysis. Today, tourism (including overseas tourism) is becoming an increasingly commonplace phenomenon due to globalization, with areas being incorporated into the scope of tourism that were previously not regarded as such, including agriculture, international conference, food, medical care, and even war and disaster. Based on this new reality, in which the entire cultural industry is now closely intertwined with tourism, there is now much more sociological research being conducted on tourism. This course will first cover the key sociological concepts and theories that have recently been developed in the field of sociology about tourism (e.g., modernity, identity, authenticity, pilgrimage), followed by an exploration of diverse examples of tourism from all over the world, including theme parks, expos, festivals, ethnic tourism, food, sex & gambling tourism, and ecological tourism.
