Welcome to The College of Social Sciences!
Ajou University’s Department of Sociology was founded in 1989 as an affiliate of the College of Social Sciences, and this year is the department’s 25th anniversary. With the implementation of the undergraduate system in 1996, it was operated as a sociology major, but since 2012-2013, it has been reorganized into a sociology department at The College of Social Sciences.
Sociology is a relatively new academic discipline that was born during the tumultuous shift from the 19th to the 20th century. While it had a late start academically compared to economic or political science, sociology nevertheless has established itself as a key discipline in a short period through its ability to provide new interpretations and explanations for phenomena that are overlooked by “traditional” disciplines. Today, having just entered the 21st century, modern society is again undergoing the chaos and rapid change that characterize transitions from one century to the next. Due to the nature of its methods of inquiry, sociology is uniquely suited to flexibly respond to such chaos and changes. Through original and critical perspectives, sociology provides adequate explanations of and supplies the building blocks for problem-solving related to diverse social phenomena. Through their sociological imagination and intellectual training, students will gain the skills they need to understand and wisely navigate society in the 21st century when it is becoming increasingly important for all members of society to live in harmony.
The faculty of Ajou University’s College of Social Sciences interact with students both inside and outside of the classroom through various activities. Although we produced our first graduate-only 20 years ago, our sociology alumni have since become active in many areas of society, including government, the press, corporations, and academia. The College of Social Sciences aims to be a true “community of the heart” that is built by and beneficial for faculty, students, and alumni and a beacon of hope that illuminates the futures of all sociology majors.
